With the rise of digital photography capabilities, there are now numerous options for capturing images underwater. From simple point-and-shoot cameras that take both photographs and video to more high-end equipment that shoots high-definition images, you’re sure to find a system that meets your needs.

This specialty course helps you easily achieve great photo and video results. This course also counts towards the Advanced Open Water Diver course and your Master Scuba Diver rating. *This course fee only covers your online training, assessments and certification card. Practical training fees, dives, dive equipment, student slate and logbook are available at additional fees via your PADI Dive Center.

Whether your interest is in underwater photography, wreck, search and recovery, or another area; PADI Specialty Instructor courses prepare you to teach the specialty that interests you.

You will receive experience in conducting both academic sessions and open water dives, plus tips on how to market and make these courses come alive for you and your students. Below is a full range of specialties our Course Director has to offer.

Through hands-on training during two scuba dives and guidance from your PADI Professional, you’ll discover:

  • How to choose the right underwater camera system for you.
  • The PADI SEA (Shoot, Examine, Adjust) method for getting great shots quickly.
  • Principles for good composition of underwater images.
  • Practical techniques to take great photos with your digital camera.

Get credit! The second dive of this PADI Specialty Diver course may credit as an Adventure Dive toward your Advanced Open Water Diver certification – ask your instructor about earning credit.

Prerequisites & Requirements

  1. PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor certification.
  2. Enrollment Agreement completed and received by Beyond the Reef located in the appendix of this catalog.
  3. See Course Fees, Books and Materials for required items located in the appendix of this catalog.
  4. These courses are scheduled individually. Call us to set up a course date.

Equipment

  • Beyond using basic scuba equipment, you’ll need a digital underwater camera and a computer or other device for downloading and viewing your images.
  • Manual white balance – Allows you to adjust for more realistic color.
  • External flash – A separate strobe underwater provides more light from a better angle.
  • Full control access –The more controls your housing provides, the more options you have while shooting.
  • Wide-angle adapter – This allows you to use a wide-angle lens. Nearly all dSLR systems have this capability.
  • Large memory card – You want enough capacity to shoot as much as you can on a single dive without concern about running out of memory.
